The view from the top of Chelsea
Known as the urban suburb of Boston, Chelsea is closer than you think. Just a brief trip over the Mystic River and you will find yourself in this cozy, up-and-coming port town. It is one of the last active ports in the state. It has a very dynamic history forged in the shipping and merchant industries. The desire for non-traditional living, space and affordable housing has attracted a new generation of the eclectic to Chelsea over the past twenty years. Now it is home to a small but growing collection of boutique stores, restaurants and cultural attractions. Boost yourself in the morning with some coffee and conversation at Chelsea City Cafe and take in an art show or a play at Chelsea Theatre Works in the afternoon.

History

Settled in 1624, declared as a town in 1739, and incorporated as a city in 1857, Chelsea is the smallest city in Massachusetts with a mere 1.8 square miles of land. One of the first British boats was captured in the Battle of Chelsea Creek, only the second battle to be fought in the Revolution.
This city survived two major fires in 1908 and 1973, in which over 18 blocks were burned down. Economic downturn, along with these fires, left Chelsea with a long uphill climb to recovery. The city continues to rebuild itself today with growing real estate and small businesses. Much of the population is a blend of young professionals and those of Hispanic descent. Just recently, in June of 2007, Chelsea named itself a Sanctuary City, which proposes to be a safe haven for illegal immigrants.
